Frederic Geurts
_Born 1965, Wilrijk
Lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium
Frederic Geurts is best known for his monumental yet fragile installations in which he explores the limits of gravity and the materiality of his constructions. The dialogue with the context is often central to this. By involving the environment, the separation between the work of art and its surroundings becomes more diffuse. The viewer stands in the artwork rather than in front of it, allowing for a total encounter.
The smaller works have a more autonomous character. You could see them as thinking exercises. Here, too, balance and equilibrium play an important role. From the search for the physical limits of his constructions, Geurts also asks himself whether a spatial work can equal the quality of a sketch: 'searching, doubting and starting over typifies us as human beings and as artists. It says something about our fallibility and vulnerability.'
Geurts' installations can be seen in public spaces in various places in Belgium. He also regularly exhibits individually or in group exhibitions, both at home and abroad.
